If you’re the one doing all your own marketing, you know how much people who write marketing articles, like to use words that make sense pretty much only to them. We’re guilty of it too!

We know you probably don’t have time to earn an entire marketing degree in between back waxes or massages, so we’ve created a handy guide that you can reference whenever you come across a term that’s got you stumped.

This glossary covers many of the marketing jargon you might see in our resources, blog posts or emails, broken down into practical and relevant examples in language that actually applies to our industry.

Be sure to bookmark it for easy reference, since we add new terms as we build new resources.

A

ANNOUNCEMENT BAR

That thin strip of text running across the very top of a website. It's prime real estate for whatever you most want visitors to see right now.

Example: "Holiday gift cards are here! Buy $100, get a $20 bonus card."

AVERAGE ORDER VALUE (AOV)

The average amount a client spends each time they check out.

Formula: Total sales ÷ number of transactions = AOV

Example: If you brought in $6,000 from 50 checkouts this week, your AOV is $120.

B

BFCM

Shorthand for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, the four-day shopping stretch right after Thanksgiving. You'll see it all over holiday marketing.

Example: In 2026, BFCM runs from Friday, Nov 27 through Monday, Nov 30.
